Review: Jillian Michaels BodyShred (Part 1)

This is an overview of my thoughts and observations of Jillian Michael's BodyShred program.  I will post Part 2 (the workout breakdowns) and Part 3 (that batsh#t crazy Opus workout) in the coming days. Note: I did not perform any of these workouts (hell no!).

UPDATE: Part 2&3 should be up next week.

Fitness Resolutions for 2015

So every New Year I pledge a ton of fitness resolutions that I never keep up with.  Ever.

But what the hell -- I am going to pledge more for 2015 anyway!

Restart with Jillian Michaels

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday break!  While we still have one more holiday to enjoy the indulgences of the season, I have already started my new rotation to kickstart my 2015 weight loss and fitness journey.  I am going back to my old standby: Jillian Michaels.  And boy, does she have something in store for 2015!

The Firm Express: Thin in 30 (Review)

So it has been a loooong hiatus for me, but I have an excuse: I started a new job.  And I have still been exercising.  Recently, I came to acquire a workout set I ignored when it was first released a few years ago: The Firm Express: Thin in 30.  I have to say, it is not perfect program, but it is an underrated gem.

Halloween Challenge: Days 11& 12

Happy Halloween!

Workout routine:

I am still doing Meta, Level 1, but decided to go for a walk yesterday.  And today I will be out and about, bar crawling and sprawling.

Yummy Treat:

I plan to go out and enjoy some appetizers and drinks.  Here is hoping I won't do too much damage.

Song of the Day

When I was in high school, I had a clock radio to force me out of bead.  Every year on Halloween, my favorite radio station -- 103.5 Kiss FM -- would play "Thriller" on the dote.  It made getting out of bed feel a little less crappy. Feeling nostalgic, I thought a it would be the appropriate song for today.

Bedtime Story

Nada.  Go out and enjoy the evening.  But if you are a homebody, plenty of good stuff on Netflix.

Happy Halloween and enjoy the weekend!  Cheers!

12 Days of Halloween: Days 9 & 10

Perhaps because I start my new job the week before Thanksgiving, I suddenly don't care about Halloween anymore; I'm all about Thanksgiving now.  It is a blasphemous thing to say and certainly out of character for me; however, as I transition into a new phase of my life, I guess my priorities change.

But I am still finishing this dang Halloween challenge, so help me Samhain!

The 12 Days of Halloween: Day 8

I am a little sad that this is the last full week in October -- well work week, technically -- of the year.  But let's make the most of it.

The 12 Days of Halloween: Days 4-7

Yes, I have fallen behind with the blogging, but it was not in vain.  I have some good news to share.

The 12 Days of Halloween: Day 3

I am noticed my sleep has been taking a hit lately and I don't know if it is my insomnia or all this spookiness.  Perhaps I need a dose of humor for today...

The 12 Days of Halloween: Day 2

Today's theme is all about training for the Zombie Apocalypse.

This is why I can't do morning workouts. (Stock photo)

The 12 Days of Halloween: Day 1

For me, this is the most wonderful time of the year.  I love fall.  I love everything about it, from the foliage to the fall harvest and Halloween.  And to commemorate the days leading up to Halloween, I thought I would spend the next 12 days blogging about fitness, food and spooky good times.

Screw my fitness routine -- It is October!

By now we should all know that radio silence on this blog means I have been a bad girl with my exercise routine.  While I am planning to restart my Tracy Anderson rotation this week, I thought I would focus this month on what really matters: it's October!

That old feeling (w/ Tracy Anderson)

So I declared my reignited love for Turbo Fire last post, and now my achy heart is beginning to miss another old flame: Tracy Anderson.

That old feeling (with Turbo Fire)

So I am doing my August Challenge.  Trying to cut sugar out of the equation ('try' being the operative word here). Enjoying evening runs and outdoor circuits in this fickle Chicago weather -- hey, at least the leaves haven't started to change yet!  And doing yoga a few times a week.

But you should know me by know: I can't stay committed for long.  My wandering heart beats at the sight of something new and different.  Or the passion gets reignited with an old flame.  In this case, I feel back in love with Turbo Fire.

August Challenge

With my birthday just 6 weeks away, I am attempting to repeat a challenge from last year -- Sugar-free Challenge.   But overall, I want to devote the month of August to really cleaning up my diet and increasing my exercise intensity.  I know I am historically terrible at my own challenges, but I thought it would still be worth a try.

As of late, I have been mixing it up some yoga (my bad trapezius muscle, remember?) and jogging (how about that marathon I keep putting off...).  But I think am ready to go back to high intensity circuit training.

Here are some "soft" goals I would like to aim for this month:

1.) Outside workouts - It is amazing how quickly summer flies!  With one month left until autumn returns, I would like to enjoy the warmer weather (more like temperate here in Chicago) and sunlight as much as possible.  This evening, I did a 3-mile jog and 16-minute circuit workout at sunset by the Loyola Campus, near the lake.  It was lovely and peaceful!

2.) Sugar-free eating - This is pretty self-explanatory, as I aim to cut out all refined, white sugars from my diet for the next 31 days.  I can't promise I can cut out all bad foods -- I will enjoy the occasional savory fried treat at a festival or enjoy fresh-baked bread from the farmer's market -- but I do want to go back to healthful eating.  Having gained some weight this year, I can attest that munching on too many sweets is to blame for 75% of my weight gain.  Au revoir, cookies!  At least for now.

3.) Going back to circuit training (but still incorporating yoga) - My body needs to be challenged and feel the burn...but it also needs rejuvenation.  I am easing myself back into more intensive exercise and have done intermediate level workouts (for me) this past week -- they kicked my butt!  I am thinking maybe 2 days of circuit training, followed by a day of yoga.

With that said, I am going to Eataly later today and I pray on hands and knees that the gelato, the Nutella bar (yes, they have a bar dedicated to Nutella) the bakery, and selection of imported Italian chocolates doesn't tempt me.  Maybe I should to start on the 2nd?  Or can I follow through with challenge until the end?

God, I hope I temporarily go blind when I walk past this section. Courtesy: NBC Chicago

The Ultimate Yogi - whoa!

I have done this program for a few days, but I am extremely impressed by what I have seen so far.  I plan to have the full review up by Wednesday (no shocker since we know I am the ultimate fitness blogger slacker).  What I can say, though, is that this may be one of the best (if the not THE best) yoga program on the market.

Enjoy a preview below:

The Chicago Marathon

We are about 100 days away from the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and I am really torn about wanting to participate.  On one hand, my aggravated trapezius muscle and the fact that I don't normally run is holding me back.  On the other, this will be the last year for me to attempt a marathon before turning 30 (I turn 29 in September).

What I am to do?

Chalene Johnson's latest offering: PiYo

Seeing as I am on a budget and in between jobs, I won't be rushing to order Chalene's latest product.  But I thought I would share for those interested.

PiYo is a body weight program that combines Pilates and yoga training with high intensity (but low impact).  Chalene had created PiYo years ago and originally licensed PiYo classes for gyms and boutique fitness studios.  This is the first time it is offered on DVD as part of a workout program.

I would love to order this and it fits with my goals right now, but I don't feel I can justify the cost.  I also have lots of DVDs to get through in my current collection, but I can see PiYo being a possibility later down the line.

See more below.

Taking inventory of my yoga collection (part 1)

If there is a silver lining to reinjuring my trapezius muscle, it is that I have been getting reacquainted with my yoga collection.

My @%*#ing trapezius muscle!

I am sure my absence has been notable and this excuse is a doozy: I pulled my trapezius. Again.  This is like the 4th or 5th time in 4 years! I admit that my form isn't always 100% perfect, but I think I just was born with a defective trapezius muscle (on my left side) -- seriously!  For now, no more high impact workouts and that especially means putting the ZWOWs away for another time.

I don't want to throw away my summer challenge, however, and may reconsider my rotation to fit my needs.  I pulled out my inventory of yoga, Pilates and fusion-like workouts and decided to turn to these right now.  I also ordered The Ultimate Yogi on Amazon, which is something I have been dying to order for awhile now.  It has also might be one of the best reviewed yoga programs on the market.  Unfortunately, its original market value was around $110.00, so this is where waiting for almost 2 years paid off; I got a used-only-once set for $55 -- and that included expedited shipping!

More updates tomorrow as I sort this through.  Stay tuned...!

Summer Challenge Redo (Days 1 & 2)

Lost internet connection.  A bruised toe.  I could give you a million reasons as to why I delayed jumping into my summer challenge

But instead, I will just into the challenge.

Zuzka Summer Challenge

I have been lagging on the blogging lately, but partly because I have been in a creative rut and haven't found anything interesting to discuss.  I decided to take a new approach and blog my every workout this summer, but in particular, document my experiences with Zuzka Light's ZWOW workouts.

Examining my Coconut Oil Experiment

Last month, I mentioned turning to coconut oil as a means to beautify myself.  I was definitely not surprised about how great coconut oil is a beauty product -- my hair looked fab after a 30-minute hair mask session!  But the amount I could save if I replaced many of my beauty products with coconut oil was the real pleasant surprise.

Six weeks until June

Summer is just around the corner, so naturally I am panicked.  How did time fly so fast?

Java and sweets are my krytonite

Okay, so I have a confession: I am packing on the pounds again.  Why?  I eat too many sweets and drink espresso drinks like they are going out of style.

30-Day Squat Challenge for April

So I thought it would be fun to being back monthly challenges (though last year I barely followed through) and see what areas of my fitness needed improvement.  And I have to be honest: my butt sucks right now!

But lucky for me, I enjoy doing squats.  This particular challenge eases you in with the rep count, progressively adding reps each day until you can reach 250 (see schedule below).  I don't expect an 11-hour miracle, but it would be a nice head start to get my booty ready for the summer.

In the meantime, let's enjoy this lovely spring weather (although it is going to snow later this week where I live).  Happy April!  Cheers!

Beautifying myself with coconut oil

We have all heard about how great coconut oil is. Paleo Diet enthusiasts tout it as the best oil to cook with and incorporate into your daily diet.

But what your replacing a majority of skin and hair care products as part of your beauty regiment?

The new and improved blog

Let's be honest: I am the ultimate procrastinator, especially when it comes to blogging.  But I haven't thrown in the towel yet over the idea that this blog could be so much more engaging and dynamic.

Revamping this blog

Happy Polar Vortex for you non-warm state residents!  I hope you are keeping warm and maintaining a hold of your sanity.

Hell has finally frozen over in Chicago.

Another invasion!

The insidious and malicious mus musculus has struck again!   Well, *beep* my current rotation; I am heading over to the gym until I can get this vile vermin removed from place.  Stay tuned...

Curse you, you villainous little vermin!

Okay I know what you are thinking: not even a week into your new schedule and you are already changing it?  Well, all I gotta say is "yup."

My Fitness Resolutions for 2014

It's that time of the year again for me to make fitness resolutions to better my body and mind...only to fall flat on my face.  But what the hell, they are fun to attempt anyways!
